Straight styli are designed to inspect simple features where direct, unobstructed contact with a measured surface is possible. A ceramic stem is lightweight yet very stiff and offers built-in crash protection. Zirconia is a tough ceramic material with hardness and wear characteristics approaching those of ruby. Its surface properties make it an ideal material for aggressive scanning applications on cast iron components.

It is one of the hardest materials available and suitable for most applications. Due to adhesive pickup, ruby tips are not recommended for scanning aluminum parts.
